How to use Social Media with Anxiety
‘why am I so scared to post on social media?’
Some aspects of communication are distinctive online, and this might increase social anxiety. One such aspect is the culture of shares and ‘Likes‘. When you post something and wait to see how many hearts or thumbs-up it receives, it can feel as though a specific number is being placed on your popularity or worth. It is opening yourself up to perceived judgement.
How to use socials with anxiety:
- Remember there is endless amount of content is shared on social media. Your post might feel like headline news, but in reality it’s more like a drop in the ocean. Don’t overthink your posts and messages or read too much into the response they get.
- On video calls, if you always watch yourself closely you’ll feel self-conscious. Focus on others and what they’re saying more than on yourself.
- Comparing yourself with others on social media is unfair and unrealistic, and will affect you only negatively. You know all of your own human flaws and quirks inside out, but see only the occasional, carefully airbrushed shot of others. Notice if you’re comparing yourself unfairly and give yourself a break.
- If you always observe social media without taking part, you’re unlikely to make meaningful connections. Try to gradually take part a little more, without overthinking.
